How National Units Handle ETIAS Applications

ETIAS National Units are responsible for reviewing and processing ETIAS applications submitted by visa-exempt travellers entering the Schengen Area. Each ETIAS National Unit checks applicant data against security databases to identify risks and ensure that only eligible travellers receive travel authorisation.

Introduction to ETIAS: The European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) is designed to enhance security by pre-screening travelers visiting the Schengen Area. Expected to be mandatory from May 2025, it requires citizens from over 60 visa-exempt countries to obtain authorization.

Role of National Units: Each EU member state establishes a National Unit responsible for processing ETIAS applications. These units verify applicants’ details against multiple databases, including Interpol and Europol, to identify potential security risks. Approximately 95% of applications are approved quickly, with only a small percentage requiring further scrutiny.

Application Review Process: Applications with security hits undergo additional checks by the ETIAS Central Unit. If unresolved, they return to the respective National Unit for a final decision. Applicants may be contacted for further information and, in rare cases, a personal interview.

Appeals and Special Authorizations: Applicants can appeal refusals. National Units can issue ETIAS with limited validity or for specific countries under certain conditions. They also have the authority to revoke authorizations if circumstances change.

Data Protection: All personal data in ETIAS is securely stored and handled according to EU regulations, ensuring applicants’ information is protected and corrections are made as needed.
